Deepening Our Relationships with Wahipana
Elemental Kilo
Wahi Pana & Ecological Kinship
Hana Noʻeau & Stewardship
Rooted in Hawaiʻi lifeways, Mākaʻikaʻi cultivates ecological kinship through elemental kilo, stewardship, wahi pana, Pāpālehu, and hana noʻeau. We engage with Wahi pana as living places of knowledge, exploring the many layers of relationships, stories, and elemental processes that connect landscapes, ocean, sky, and ourselves.
Join us for MākaʻikaʻiFAQS
Mākaʻikaʻi invites us to visit, explore, observe, and deepen our understanding of wahipana. More than a journey through landscapes, it is an opportunity to regenerate our relationships with the living environments that shape who we are.

Much like the practice of navigation, Mākaʻikaʻi teaches us to recognize, interpret, and learn from the signs and patterns of our natural world. Through the kilo of wahipana, we deepen our awareness of the environments we belong to, strengthen our kuleana within them, and discover how these relationships guide us in navigating life.
Who is Mākaʻikaʻi for?
At the heart of Hālau ʻŌhiʻa huakaʻi is transformation. We often return from these experiences not quite the same as when we arrived. Through closer interaction with our natural environments, we step outside the familiar rhythms of our everyday lives, allowing our elemental teachers to reveal new ways of seeing, feeling, and understanding the world around us.
For the first time, we are opening a glimpse into the Hālau ʻŌhiʻa huakaʻi process to those beyond our Hālau learning community. While Mākaʻikaʻi offers a smaller, micro-huakaʻi experience rather than a full Hālau ʻŌhiʻa huakaʻi, we recognize that even the smallest transformations can create the greatest impacts. Usually, our huakaʻi experiences are reserved for Hālau ʻŌhiʻa learners only.
Registration is open to the public. You do not need to be a registered Hālau ʻŌhiʻa learner to attend.
What will make itself apparent to you when you begin to kilo more closely? What relationships, understandings, or parts of yourself might emerge through your interactions with place?
Mākaʻikaʻi welcomes current Hālau ʻŌhiʻa learners, former learners, and those who have never participated in Hālau ʻŌhiʻa. Whether you are returning to familiar teachings or encountering these experiences for the first time, Mākaʻikaʻi is an invitation to explore, reconnect, and discover what our elemental teachers have to share.
A Glimpse into Our Huakaʻi
Three days in Kohala, we will engage with place through elemental kilo, mele, stewardship, and hana noʻeau.
Our time together will include:

Elemental kilo: Observing the signs, patterns, and relationships of land, ocean, and sky.
-
Wahi pana: Engaging with the stories and layers of knowledge held within the places we visit.
-
Mele Kūmau & Pāpālehu: Exploring mele as a way to deepen our understanding of and relationships with place.
-
Stewardship at Kōnea o Kukui: Learning through care, participation, and 'āina stewardship.
-
Kūkākūkā & Reflection: Sharing observations and considering what these experiences reveal about our relationships and ourselves.
